Ridi Vihara ('Silver Temple') near Kurunegala is a 2nd century BCE cave temple where legendary silver ore was discovered, funding construction of Ruwanwelisaya stupa in Anuradhapura. Rock cave contains beautiful Kandyan-period murals, Dutch-tile floor, and small silver-ore samples embedded in the ceiling.

Small, off tourist track, deeply atmospheric. Free entry, donation appreciated. Best half-day trip from Kurunegala or as a stop en route to Anuradhapura from Colombo. Bring a torch — the interior murals are poorly lit. Respectful behavior expected.
