Ritigala is divided into an Archaeological Reserve area and a Strict Natural Reserve (SNR). The public can visit the lower monastery ruins, stone pathways, and meditation platforms along the designated Department of Archaeology trail. However, climbing beyond the archaeological boundary towards the central mountain peaks requires written permission from the Director General of Wildlife Conservation, which is granted almost exclusively for accredited scientific research.
The site lacks tourist facilities or lighting; entering past 4:00 PM is prohibited due to regular elephant movements along the base forest corridors.
Unlike Sigiriya’s manicured grounds, Ritigala features wet stone slabs covered in dense moss. Wearing sticky rubber trail runners is better than smooth hiking boots.
