We want to visit the giant Buddha carvings at Buduruwagala. Is the dirt road leading into the jungle safe for a rental tuk-tuk, or will we damage the vehicle.

The road to Buduruwagala has been significantly improved. It is paved for the majority of the way from the Wellawaya turnoff. Only the last few kilometers near the archaeological site become a bumpy dirt track. A rental tuk-tuk can handle it perfectly fine as long as you drive slowly to avoid bottoming out the oil sump on deep potholes.

Try to get there by 8 AM. The morning sun hits the rock face directly, making the carvings glow. By midday, they are in shadows.

If there was heavy rain the night before, be very careful. Tuk-tuks have small 8-inch tires and get stuck in deep mud ruts very easily.

There is a beautiful scenic lake halfway down the road. Pull the tuk-tuk over there; it is an incredible spot for landscape photography.

Watch out for peacocks! The scrub jungle around that road is full of them, and they sometimes dart across the road unexpectedly.

It is one of the most stunning and under-visited ancient sites in the country. The 50-foot rock carving is absolutely magnificent. Totally worth the bumpy ride.
