We are looking for a deeply spiritual experience and want to visit the Thanthirimale Raja Maha Viharaya. Are there any local village homes that accept tourists for the night nearby, instead of staying in Anuradhapura city.

Thanthirimale is magical, especially around a Poya day. It is built on massive granite boulders and features a stunning carved reclining Buddha. Because it is surrounded by Wilpattu National Park and dense forest, tourist infrastructure is minimal. You will not find homestays listed online. You need to contact a registered local guide in Anuradhapura who can arrange for a trusted village farming family to host you for the night.

The sunset from the top of the Thanthirimale rock overlooking the vast dry zone jungle is one of the most spectacular sights in the country.

Since it borders Wilpattu, the wildlife is very active. If you stay in a village home there, you will almost certainly hear wild elephants trumpeting in the distance at night.
