The number one rule is DO NOT honk your horn or flash your high beams. This agitates the elephant and can trigger a charge. Stop your car, turn off the engine, maintain at least 50 meters of distance, and wait in silence for the elephant to cross. If it starts walking towards your car, put it in reverse and back away smoothly.

Also, it is highly illegal to throw food out the window to distract them. It trains them to attack future cars.
