To experience a true local market near Ahangama, head slightly inland to the Imaduwa local market. It is completely authentic and bustling with villagers buying fresh spices, exotic fruits, and vegetables directly from farmers.
For the absolute freshest fish, wake up at 6 AM and go directly to the Weligama fishing harbor. You can buy incredible tuna and mahi mahi straight off the colorful fishing boats as they arrive back from the night shift.
If you want a quieter experience, simply walk along the main Ahangama road early in the morning and look for small, independent produce stands. The local vendors are incredibly friendly and the prices are deeply authentic.
