Shared hostel kitchen — okay to borrow a gas lighter or should I buy my own?

Hostel common kitchen, gas hob, no lighter in the drawer. Other guests seem to have one. I need to boil pasta. Is borrowing a lighter for two minutes normal hostel etiquette here, or do people buy a cheap one from the corner shop and keep it in their cook kit?

Borrowing for a minute is normal if you ask, return it immediately, and do not walk off with it. Many desks also keep a kitchen lighter in a drawer — ask reception first. Buying a cheap lighter from a corner shop for your cook kit avoids repeating the ask all week. I will not invent a lighter rental fee. Do not light from another burner with paper if you are unsure of the hob. Short ask, quick return, or own lighter — all fine.
