I bought a heavy wooden mask and some tea. Is it reliable to ship a 5kg box back to Europe using the regular Sri Lankan post office, or should I use DHL?

Sri Lanka Post is surprisingly reliable for international parcels. Ask for "Sea Mail" if you want it cheap (takes 2-3 months) or "EMS" (Express Mail Service) for airmail (takes 10-14 days). They provide a tracking number that works internationally.

Do not seal your box before going to the post office! The postal workers are required by customs law to inspect the contents of international parcels before taping them shut. Bring your items in an open box.

I sent a 4kg box of tea and clothes via EMS to the UK. It arrived in 9 days in perfect condition and cost a fraction of what DHL quoted me.

Make sure to wrap the wooden mask in lots of bubble wrap. The post office sells packing materials, but it is better to do it yourself at your hotel.

This is incredibly helpful, especially the tip about keeping the box open for inspection. Thank you!
