Should tourists carry passport everywhere in Sri Lanka or leave in hotel safe

Hotel manager, practical experience. LEGAL position: foreigners are technically expected to carry official ID at all times, but in day-to-day tourist reality this is very rarely enforced for casual outings. PRACTICAL rule most experienced travelers follow: (1) CARRY THE PASSPORT for: airport transfers, inter-city TRAIN or bus rides that cross districts (occasional checkpoint), any BANK visit or ATM issue, immigration/visa office visits, checking into a new hotel, hospital visits. (2) LEAVE IN HOTEL SAFE for: casual beach days, market walks in the local town, cafe/restaurant outings, tuktuk rides for short local trips, day trips near your base. Carry a PHOTOCOPY of the passport photo page + ETA, plus a photo of them in your phone, in these cases. This satisfies the police checkpoint check in 99% of cases.
Copy in wallet, digital in phone + email, passport in safe on beach days, on-person for train and bank. Perfect. Arigato!
HOTEL SAFES: in-room electronic safes at mid-range and up hotels are reliable - the ACTUAL risk is you forgetting the passport in the safe on checkout (it happens weekly at every hotel; front desk WhatsApps guests and posts the passport back at guest cost). If your accommodation has no in-room safe (some guesthouses, hostels), ask the front desk to lock the passport in the main safe with a written receipt. LOSS PROTOCOL if it happens: report immediately to Tourist Police (1912) and get a police report - required for embassy replacement. Have DIGITAL COPIES stored in cloud (email to yourself). Replacement at your embassy in Colombo takes 3-10 working days depending on nationality; keep a bit of buffer budget and time.
