The water garden irrigation system at Sigiriya utilized underground terracotta pipeline networks engineered to transport water across terraced boulder gardens without leaking. High-fired ceramic pipe sections (each 50cm long with tapered socket-and-spigot joints) were fitted together and sealed with hydraulic lime-and-clay putty collars. Fired at temperatures exceeding 900°C, the low-porosity ceramic pipes withstood internal hydrostatic pressure head generated by elevation drops from the Sigiriya reservoir, operating gravity fountains on lower garden terraces successfully.
