The symmetrical water fountains in the Miniature Water Gardens of Sigiriya operate entirely on natural gravity-fed hydrostatic pressure. Water diverted from the elevated Sigiriya Mahawewa tank was funneled through underground conduits made of high-fired, interlocking terracotta pipes jointed with waterproof lime mortar. The pipe network narrows progressively as it approaches the lower fountain courtyards, converting potential energy into hydraulic pressure head. Water discharges upward through pierced circular limestone plates set inside sunken stone pools, producing natural water jets that still spray up to 1 meter high after monsoon rains.
The fountains operate on an alternating cycle: four symmetrical fountain plates feed into serpentine channels that circulate water to adjacent water gardens.
Visiting during or immediately after the Northeast Monsoon (November to January) provides the best chance to witness the ancient fountains spraying actively.
