Nepenthes distillatoria (The Kanduru Gas or Pitcher Plant) is a striking carnivorous plant endemic to Sri Lanka, thriving across the waterlogged, nutrient-deficient quartz ridges and scrub margins of Sinharaja and Kanneliya. Its modified leaf tendrils terminate in hollow, tubular pitcher urns filled with acidic digestive fluid containing proteolytic enzymes. Insects lured by nectar glands along the peristome (rim) slip on downward-facing waxy cuticular scales, plunging into the fluid where chitinous exoskeletons are digested to absorb vital nitrogen and phosphorus.

Specific specialized mosquito larvae (such as Topomyia species) live commensally inside Nepenthes pitchers, immune to the digestive acid.

Hikers along the Kudawa trail can observe wild pitcher plants climbing over low bushes without disturbing fragile root systems.
