Just going for a day. Can I hike without a guide?

Guide is mandatory - Sinharaja is a UNESCO World Heritage rainforest and entry rules require licensed guide (Forest Department regulation). Costs 2000-3500 LKR for half-day, 4000-6000 LKR full-day. Guide identifies endemic birds (Ceylon Blue Magpie, Layard's Parakeet), wildlife (purple-faced langur), medicinal plants. Without guide: cannot enter beyond a very short entrance trail. Book guide at Kudawa or Deniyaya entrance - guides queue and rotate. Bring leech socks (leeches abundant in wet forest).

Half-day is enough for most people; full-day is for serious birders. Kudawa entrance is more visited, Deniyaya quieter. Combine with a stay in Sinharaja edge lodging - Rainforest Ecolodge is the classic.
