The name Sinharaja translates to Lion King. Are there any actual historical ruins inside the rainforest or is the lore strictly tied to ancient indigenous tribes and myth.

There are no major stone cities in Sinharaja like in the dry zone. The history here is deeply tied to the land and myth. Legend says a lion lived in these dense woods and fathered the Sinhalese race. However, there are ancient footpaths used by the indigenous Vedda people, and many endemic trees still hold their original pre-colonial medicinal names.

The real treasure of Sinharaja is its biodiversity. It is a living museum. Some of the giant ferns and canopy trees have survived unchanged since Sri Lanka was part of the Gondwana supercontinent millions of years ago.

During the Kandyan Kingdom era, the rainforest acted as an impenetrable natural fortress against the British and Dutch. The local kings used the dense jungle and leeches to their tactical advantage.

If you hike the Morningside trail of Sinharaja, your tracker will tell you incredible stories about how ancient villagers used specific bird calls to predict weather and navigate the canopy.

Wear leech socks! The history is fascinating but the leeches are very real and very hungry all year round in the wet zone.
