Terrestrial land leeches (Haemadipsa zeylanica and the larger Haemadipsa ornata) are abundant in the leaf litter of Sinharaja, detecting approaching warm-blooded mammals via ground vibrations and carbon dioxide cues. Standard cotton socks are easily penetrated by leech mouthparts. The primary defense is wearing knee-high anti-leech socks woven from tightly woven, unbleached canvas or calico, pulled over trousers and laced tightly below the knee. Spraying boots and lower gaiters with a concentrated natural solution of steeped tobacco leaves or eucalyptus oil repels leeches effectively.
If a leech attaches, do not pull it off forcefully as this tears skin and causes secondary infections; apply a pinch of salt, lime juice, or hand sanitizer to make it detach naturally.
Leech bites secrete an anticoagulant (hirudin); bites bleed freely for up to 30 minutes. Clean the puncture with antiseptic and apply a firm dry plaster.
Stay in the center of maintained gravel trails; brushing against overhanging wet ferns and trailside vegetation allows leeches to latch directly onto upper clothing.
