The endemic aquatic aroid Cryptocoryne bogneri (Water Trumpet / Atiudayan) is a specialized rheophyte adapted to the fast-flowing, torrential granite streams of Sinharaja and Kanneliya rainforests. Living submerged on river beds, it anchors using thick, fleshy, creeping rhizomes wedged into crevices between submerged quartz boulders and coarse gravel. The submerged leaves are narrow, lanceolate, and possess flexible petioles with wavy margins that flutter in foaming rapids, minimizing hydrodynamic drag during flash flood spates. When dry-season water levels drop, the plants produce trumpet-shaped floral spathes that emerge above the water line for pollination.
They require soft, acidic blackwater (pH 5.5 to 6.5) shaded by overhanging Dipterocarp canopies; clearing riverside trees triggers fatal algae smothering.
Illegal uprooting of wild Cryptocoryne populations for the international commercial aquarium trade is heavily prosecuted under Schedule IV of the FFPO.
Submerged colonies provide shelter and egg-laying substrate for endemic freshwater fishes, including the Black Ruby Barb and Cherry Barb.
