Sri Lanka is a global evolutionary center of endemism for Shield-tail Snakes (Family Uropeltidae), featuring over 20 point-endemic species in genera Rhinophis and Uropeltis. Adapted strictly for subterranean burrowing in damp rainforest clay, they possess heavily ossified, pointed conical skulls used as subterranean battering rams. Their eyes are small and protected beneath thick transparent ocular shields. Their definitive adaptation is the caudal tail disc: an enlarged, rough, multi-spined terminal scale plate. When burrowing forward, the snake presses the rigid tail disc firmly against the soil burrow wall to anchor its body.
