I want to experience authentic local celebrations, not the big tourist-heavy festivals. Any tips?

Every temple and village has its own smaller festivals and poya day celebrations throughout the year. These are often more intimate and authentic than the big famous peraheras. They're usually announced locally rather than widely advertised. Asking your guesthouse host or other locals what's happening during your stay is the best way to find them. Being respectful, dressing appropriately, and following local customs (removing shoes, modest dress, quiet observation) is important. These smaller events can be some of the most memorable cultural experiences.

The smaller local events are often more meaningful than the big staged ones. They happen all the time — you just need to ask locally.
