Soft bag overweight at CMB check-in — rearrange packing at the counter or just pay excess?

Soft duffel came in a few kilos over at the CMB departure counter. Agent pointed at the scale and mentioned excess. Partner started pulling shoes into the cabin bag while the queue stacked up behind us. Do travelers usually rearrange on the spot and reweigh, or is paying the airline excess the calmer move when you are already late for security? Not looking for an invented official fee — just what people actually do at that counter.

Most soft bags that tip over by a kilo or two can be fixed at the counter: move dense items into a cabin bag within size limits, zip again, and ask to reweigh. Agents see this every day. If you are truly stuffed and short on time, paying the excess the airline quotes is the calm path — I will not invent that tariff as gospel because it changes by airline and weight. Do not argue loudly in the queue. Rearrange once, reweigh once, or pay and walk. Either is normal traveler behavior at CMB.
