Reasonably safe with common sense. Sri Lanka has low tourist theft crime relative to some destinations, but visible expensive camera + solo tourist = vigilance needed in crowded urban zones (Pettah, Fort Colombo, Kandy market). Solo hikes with camera in nature: very safe.

Best practices: use a discreet camera bag (not photographer-branded), remove lens caps only when shooting, don't display multiple lenses. Insurance: essential for pro kit. In Pettah/Fort: less visible camera + hand strap security. At beaches: bag closed when not shooting. Locked hotel safe for unused gear.
