Realistic 10-day backpacker route: 1 night Negombo (arrival), 2 nights Sigiriya area (climb + Dambulla), 2 nights Kandy (Temple of Tooth, Perahera if timing works), 2 nights Ella (train from Kandy, Little Adam's, Nine Arch), 3 nights beach (Mirissa or Hiriketiya for surfing/relaxing). Skip Colombo transit - go straight south from Ella by bus. Fast pace but doable if you're moving quickly. Add 2-3 days for breathing room.

Or slower: skip Sigiriya area entirely if not into ruins - do 3 nights Kandy, 3 nights Ella, 4 nights beach. Fewer transitions, more depth. Sri Lanka rewards slowing down.
