Sri Lanka best Ambalangoda mask museum visit - what to expect?
3 Answers from travellers
Ambalangoda mask circuit: (1) Ariyapala Traditional Masks Museum (excellent - artisan family maintains museum + workshop, watch mask carving, 3 exhibition floors, USD 3-5 entry, open 8am-5pm). (2) Southland Masks Factory (nearby - working atelier + small showroom). (3) National Museum of Masks (Ambalangoda central - historical context). Combined visit: half day. Ariyapala is the standout - active family workshop where you see masks made front to back. Buy authentic masks direct at 30-50% below Colombo shops. Mask sizes range from tiny 100 LKR magnets to 50000+ LKR ceremonial pieces.
Also: some workshops offer 'try mask making' 1-hour hands-on for USD 15-30 - kids love this. Ambalangoda is 90-min drive south of Colombo - combine with Bentota River tour or Handunugoda tea estate day trip. Rich cultural half-day.
