Angampora (Sri Lankan traditional martial art - 3000+ year history): (1) Amunugama Ancestral Battle School (Bandara Lineage - traditional teaching, Kandy area). (2) Rathabera School (Colombo - preserving tradition). (3) Some cultural centers demonstrate for tourists but don't teach seriously. Real Angampora training: 12+ year commitment traditionally. Short courses for foreigners: 4-week introductions available at established schools. Includes: unarmed combat techniques, weaponry (angam, hulla), meditative practice, traditional philosophy. USD 100-400 for month-long introduction. Serious commitment needed for full training path.
For serious pursuit: 4-week intensive at Amunugama School. Accommodation included. Traditional guru-student relationship. Test yourself: if you can commit 3-6 hours daily training + discipline of traditional teacher-student relationship, worthwhile. Otherwise: cultural demonstration + basic introductions available.
Related: Sri Lankan traditional stick fighting (kalari-adjacent), traditional archery, sword arts. Historically integrated with Angampora. Modern practice focuses on unarmed + basic weapons more than full historical arsenal.
Also worth: Angampora demonstrations at cultural events (occasional public performances). See the tradition without personal training commitment. Sri Lankan cultural affairs department has occasional performances. Different from actual training but educational.
Physical demands: Angampora combines striking + grappling + weapons + acrobatics + meditation. High fitness required. Not for casual martial artist. Family lineage traditionally taught - foreign students accepted at some schools but requires respectful approach.
Angampora rediscovered + preserved after being nearly lost during colonial suppression. Modern revival: growing international interest. Sri Lankan government supports preservation. Real schools distinguish authentic tradition from tourism performances.
Contacting Amunugama School for 4-week intensive starting next month. Also attending public demonstration this weekend to see tradition in action first. This has been on my martial arts bucket list for years. Time to actually pursue it seriously.
