Sri Lanka best Bawa architecture walking tour - Colombo circuit?
5 Answers from travellers
Geoffrey Bawa Colombo walking tour circuit: (1) Number 11 (his personal Colombo house at 33rd Lane - guided tours by appointment, 2-3 pm Mon/Wed/Fri, USD 15). (2) Bawa Foundation office. (3) Parliament of Sri Lanka (Jayawardenepura Kotte - Bawa's masterwork, external only + occasional tours). (4) De Saram House (his early client). (5) Ena de Silva House (moved to Lunuganga). Best done: half day guided by Bawa Trust ($30-60 for group tour). For deep dive: 2-day tour combining Colombo + Lunuganga (Bentota estate) + Blue Water Wadduwa + Kandalama = full Bawa circuit.
Number 11 tour Wednesday afternoons is confirmed for next week. Also picked up the Robson book at Barefoot yesterday - it's massive but perfect. Might extend to Lunuganga overnight if the tour ends up as good as it sounds.
Bawa Trust runs official tours + educational programs. Contact ahead - website has tour calendar. Also occasionally hosts overnight stays at some Bawa properties for architecture enthusiasts.
Prof David Robson's 'Geoffrey Bawa: The Complete Works' book is essential prep. Available at Barefoot Colombo bookshop. Understand Bawa's principles (indoor-outdoor flow, courtyards, water elements, tropical modernism) before visiting - transforms experience.
Also worth: Bentota Beach Hotel (his), Jetwing Lighthouse Galle (his final major work), Colombo's Kandalama-inspired Cinnamon Grand entrance. Multiple Bawa properties + inspired designs across Colombo.
