For young kids: Passikudah (east coast, May-Sept) has the calmest shallow bay in Sri Lanka - can walk 300m out and still ankle-deep. Perfect for toddlers. Alternative: Bentota beach (south, Dec-Apr) - long calm beach, family resorts (Amaya, Vivanta, Anantara). Avoid: Mirissa (busy, waves), Weligama (surf beach), Hikkaduwa (surf beach). Also: Tangalle bays (some sheltered coves like Silent Beach) work for confident kids.
Passikudah in May-Sept is the answer for very young kids. Amaya Beach Passikudah, Uga Bay, or Anilana Passikudah all family-friendly with pools and kid amenities. Sun protection heavy - the light is bright at that latitude.
