Sri Lanka best biryani - Muslim quarter Colombo where?
3 Answers from travellers
Colombo's Muslim quarter (Slave Island, Kollupitiya, Wellawatte) has the best biryani. Top picks: Hotel Nippon (Slave Island - ancient institution, chicken biryani 800-1200 LKR), Buhary Hotel (Kollupitiya - long queue Fridays), Mubarak (Wellawatte - locals rate), Cafe De Sunday (Bambalapitiya area - smaller but excellent). Best experience: Buhary or Nippon Friday lunch (post-Jumma prayer rush). Sri Lankan biryani style is drier than Indian version, more subtle spicing, always served with a hard-boiled egg and mint chutney.
Also excellent: Nawaloka Meals (multiple locations) does Malay/Muslim style biryani in canteen setting. Cheaper. For sit-down proper biryani experience: Nippon. Bring an appetite - portions are generous.
