Sri Lanka best Catholic churches historical - Portuguese heritage?
3 Answers from travellers
Sri Lanka's Catholic heritage (Portuguese origin, Dutch reformed, then Catholic revival): (1) St. Mary's Basilica Negombo - the country's largest Catholic church, ornate ceiling paintings, seaside town with fisher Catholic community. (2) St. Lucia's Cathedral Colombo (Kotahena) - stunning Gothic architecture. (3) St. Anthony's Shrine Kochchikade Colombo - major pilgrimage site (also site of 2019 attack, respectfully mentioned). (4) Star Fort Catholic Church Matara (Portuguese colonial). (5) St. Sebastian Church Kandana (feast day famous). Basilica of Our Lady of Lanka in Ragama (national basilica). Negombo is the most concentrated Catholic heritage town - 'Little Rome of the East'.
Negombo also has beautiful Catholic art, Portuguese liturgical style Masses in Sinhala + English, evening processions in Marian months. If Catholic-heritage focused: spend 2 nights Negombo, visit churches + fishing community + morning fish market. Culturally rich.
