Sri Lanka best coconut arrack drink - and cocktails?
3 Answers from travellers
Sri Lankan arrack is a distilled spirit from coconut palm nectar (kithul jaggery neighbor). Brands: Rockland (most premium, aged reserves), Old Reserve, Ceylon Arrack, Mendis Special. Serve: (1) neat over ice with a slice of lime. (2) Arrack sour (arrack + fresh lime + sugar - Sri Lankan version of margarita). (3) Arrack + ginger beer + lime = local highball. (4) Arrack + coconut water = tropical simple. (5) Cocktail bars now use it in creative recipes (Colombo cocktail scene). Ceylon Arrack has a well-designed premium bottle - as a souvenir great. Reef Bar (Colombo) mixes elevated arrack cocktails.
Buy: Cargills, Keells, ODEL sell all brands 1500-4500 LKR bottle. Rockland Aged 12 Years is premium (~USD 30, worth it as gift). Not aggressive alcohol like whiskey - it's smoother, coconut-tinged. Perfect sundowner on the beach with a splash of soda and lime. Ceylonese sipping culture.
