Coconut palm climbing is dying traditional skill in Sri Lanka - young generation moving away from craft. Demonstrations arranged via: (1) Some coconut estates (specifically ecotourism-oriented ones near Chilaw + Puttalam). (2) Village experience tours (Sri Lanka Ecotourism Foundation). (3) Some resorts arrange for guests (Cinnamon Grand's traditional cultural evenings occasionally). (4) Kithul palm tappers similar skill - can arrange kithul + coconut climb combined demo. USD 10-30 per demonstration + small tip. Climbers use foot straps + rope + skill to ascend 20-30m palms with a knife in seconds. Fascinating to watch.
Watched a demo yesterday at a village near Chilaw - watching a 60-year-old climber go up in 20 seconds was unreal. Skill I'll never forget. Tipped him generously. Cultural preservation feels urgent when you see how few are left doing this.
Also: traditional 'kavati' (coconut-cutter's) tools now collector items. Some tourist shops sell replica traditional tools. Real climbers now getting older - see this cultural skill while it still exists in traditional form.
