Sri Lankan coffee (Ceylon coffee) history + estates: coffee was major crop before rust destroyed industry 1870s (replaced by tea). Modern revival: small estates producing specialty coffee. Balangoda region + Rathnapura + some Kandy area. Estate tours: (1) Handunugoda Estate (mainly tea + spices but has small coffee production). (2) Sonjas Coffee (small estate). (3) Some Rathnapura + Balangoda estates offer visits. (4) Kaldi's Coffee Roasters (Colombo) has estate connections. Ceylon coffee: revival specialty crop, mostly single-origin roasts. Prices: USD 20-40 per 250g premium beans. Estate tours USD 30-80 half-day.

Question: is Balangoda coffee tour appropriate as day trip from Nuwara Eliya or need overnight? Also is there any coffee-focused accommodation (like tea plantation stays)?

For serious coffee tourism: contact Kaldi's Coffee Roasters Colombo - they have relationships with growers + arrange visits. Boutique experience, quality-focused. Meet farmers, cupping sessions, buy direct. Emerging Sri Lankan coffee scene.

Sri Lankan coffee character: high-altitude Balangoda area produces sweet, medium-body coffee with fruity notes. Different from Ethiopian or Colombian profiles. Small production, growing quality. Sri Lankan cafes now serving local single-origin roasts. Worth trying to compare.
