Kandy is the home of traditional drumming (Kandyan tradition includes geta bera - the double-headed hourglass drum used in dance and temple). Nuwan Perera Drumming Studio (Kandy), some Cultural Centre teachers offer private lessons (2000-5000 LKR/hour). Also: some Buddhist temples have drum-training as part of religious training - occasionally open to visitors observing. For serious learners: multi-day workshop with a master drummer arranged through Kandy Cultural Centre.
Also: yak bera (drum used in devil dancing) taught more in the south (Ambalangoda area). Different tradition. For Kandyan drumming, stay Kandy. For low-country drumming, south. Both are 2500-5000 LKR/lesson roughly.
