Best gifts host families appreciate: (1) Chocolate from your country (universally loved, kids especially - Toblerone, Ferrero Rocher). (2) Notebooks + pens for the children (schools need supplies). (3) Photos of your own family/country in a small album. (4) Coffee or tea from your region. (5) A small toy for children. Avoid: alcohol (many rural homes don't drink), religious items (assumes belief), fancy electronics (creates awkwardness). Present with both hands + slight bow. Give at end of stay, not arrival (feels less transactional).

Chocolate + notebooks + printed photos noted. Quick follow-up: is it culturally weird to give cash as a gift instead? My family always does that back home.

Practical addition: leftover foreign currency coins for kids' collections, stickers with foreign country flags. Kids show these off for months after. Weight matters - pack gifts in checked bag, distribute as you go.

Bring 3-5 different small items rather than one expensive item. Also: a printed group photo taken during your stay, mailed later, is remembered for years. Ask for their postal address.
