Sri Lanka best Hindu temples Jaffna itinerary - which to prioritize?
3 Answers from travellers
Jaffna Hindu temple circuit: (1) Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil (Jaffna city center - grandest, must-visit, best at 5pm evening puja). (2) Naguleswaram Kovil (Keerimalai - oceanside, sacred hot springs). (3) Maviddapuram Kandaswamy Kovil (near Keerimalai - historic). (4) Selva Sannithi Murugan Kovil (Thondamanaru - important pilgrimage). (5) Vallipuram Alwar Kovil (ancient Vishnu temple, north). Nallur is the crown jewel - go for evening puja, dress traditional (avoid shorts, women covered). Naga Poosani Amman on Nagadeepa Island is separate day (boat + drive).
Nallur festival (Aug-Sept, 25 days of processions) is Sri Lanka's most spectacular Hindu festival - if timing works, plan around it. Otherwise regular evening puja at Nallur is unforgettable - conch shells, drums, oil lamps, devotees in white. 6-7pm arrive.
