Language exchange Colombo 2026:

  1. Sri Lanka Language Meetup (Meetup.com - weekly Sinhala-English exchanges, free/donation).

  2. British Council Colombo language corners (structured programs, some free).

  3. Alliance Française language exchange nights.

  4. University of Colombo Sinhala language classes for foreigners (semester-long).

  5. Private tutoring via Preply.com + iTalki online (Sri Lankan Sinhala tutors USD 15-30/hour).

  6. Coliving spaces (Verse Collective, Trove) often host language exchange nights.

Sinhala learning: focus on basic phrases + numbers + polite forms first. Sri Lankans very patient with foreign attempts + reward with warmth.

Joining Meetup.com Sri Lanka Language group before I arrive + booking online iTalki tutor for pre-trip practice. Plan to attend Verse Collective language night when I'm in Ahangama. Goal: basic conversational Sinhala by end of trip. Motivated!

For structured Sinhala learning: 'Colloquial Sinhala' by Silva + Coates textbook (available Barefoot Bookshop). YouTube channel 'Sinhala with Naveen' has free progressive lessons. Duolingo has no Sinhala yet. Basic conversational Sinhala achievable in 3-4 months of consistent effort with tutor + practice.
