Moon + sea photography Sri Lanka: (1) Full moon rise over ocean east coast (Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Passikudah, Arugam Bay) - moon rises over water at dusk. Spectacular. (2) Moon set over ocean south + west coasts at dawn. (3) Combining with low tide creates reflection pools + exposed rocks + tidal patterns. Tide charts + moon calendar essential. Sri Lanka tides: 2 high + 2 low per day, cycle predictable. Low tide during full moon = best photography setup. Apps: My Tide Times, Windy (tide overlay). Bring: sturdy tripod (wind + waves), ND filters for balancing exposure, wide-angle lens, headlamp for setup in dark.
Also: partial + waxing gibbous moons often more photogenic than full (dimensional lighting, less blown-out). Try 2-3 days before full moon for moonlight + landscape balance. Full moon washes out surroundings sometimes.
Technical settings for moon + landscape: HDR bracket (moon much brighter than surroundings), or blend exposures in post. Moon at 1/250 sec + f/8 + ISO 100 + landscape at 30 sec + f/8 + ISO 400 = starting points. Blend in Photoshop.
Composition ideas: (1) Moon reflection in tide pools. (2) Fishing boats silhouetted against rising moon. (3) Stilt fishermen at Weligama during full moon dusk. (4) Wave-worn rocks framed by moon rise. Bring: circular polarizer for reflection control, ND grad for sky-water balance.
Best months for combining: October-March for calm seas + clear skies. April-September east coast, May-September west can be rougher. Weather forecast + tide + moon phase = triple confirmation before setting out.
