Sri Lanka best moon phase for stargazing 2026 - dark sky calendar?
5 Answers from travellers
2026 new moons for optimal stargazing: Jan 19, Feb 17, Mar 19, Apr 17, May 17, Jun 15, Jul 15, Aug 13, Sep 11, Oct 10, Nov 9, Dec 9. Best Milky Way viewing months in Sri Lanka: July-November (galactic center visible high in sky). Combine new moon date +/- 3 days with these months = ideal window. Best dark-sky locations: Horton Plains area (highest elevation, minimal light pollution), Knuckles Range interior, Wilpattu National Park, Kalpitiya salt flats. Bring: fast wide lens (f/2.8 or wider), sturdy tripod, remote shutter, warm layers (Horton Plains gets 5-10C at night).
Question: is Horton Plains accessible for overnight photography or only day permits? I want to shoot until at least 2am for good angles.
Weather check: dry season correlates with best skies (Dec-Mar south, May-Sep east). Post-monsoon transitional months can bring haze. Check forecast 3-5 days ahead. Book flexible accommodation for weather cancellation.
Practical: light pollution map at lightpollutionmap.info shows Horton Plains + Knuckles as darkest zones. Colombo + coastal towns are worst. Even Ella has moderate light pollution. Serious astro = deep interior locations. Combine with wildlife day trip for full day out.
Best month for pure Milky Way galactic core: August-September new moon nights. Southern Cross visible year-round at Sri Lanka's latitude. Southern hemisphere constellations partially visible. Different from Northern hemisphere sky - travel novelty for European/US astrophotographers.
