Calm-water paddleboard spots: (1) Bentota River + Madu Ganga estuary (perfectly flat, mangrove backdrop, Bentota Adventure operators rent boards USD 15-25/hour). (2) Weligama Bay (calm morning waters). (3) Bolgoda Lake (freshwater, near Colombo, popular with locals). (4) Kalpitiya lagoon (calm side away from kite surf zone). (5) Trincomalee bay (peak season May-Sept). (6) Rekawa lagoon (near Tangalle - quiet, wildlife-rich). For lessons + rental: Bentota River is best organized (multiple operators, beginner-friendly). USD 20-45 for 1-hour lesson including board + safety brief.

Practical: sunscreen essential (SPF50 water-resistant), rashguard prevents burn on shoulders, dry bag for phone/keys, water bottle. First 30 min = getting balance, then fun. Falls into water usually gentle. Suitable for kids 8+ with instructor.

Also: some hotels have their own SUP boards for guests (Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle, Cinnamon Bey Beruwala). Free with stay. Not as good as guided lesson but okay if just wanting to try. Sunrise SUP is magical - book dawn lesson.
