Pet-friendly is a small but growing segment. Options: (1) Airbnb whole-home rentals - most flexible; filter 'pets allowed' and message host directly. Many Colombo and Galle Fort villa rentals accept dogs. (2) Boutique guesthouses - some accept small pets; contact directly (Villa Rosa Kandy, some Ella guesthouses). (3) 'Farm stays' + eco-lodges - more likely to welcome dogs (Back of Beyond Sigiriya, some Sinharaja edge lodges). (4) Large luxury resorts - generally NOT pet-friendly (Anantara, Cape Weligama, Amangalla all say no). Sri Lankan hospitality culture around pets is different from Europe/US - a lot of anxiety about dogs in commercial spaces even from otherwise-warm hosts. Book direct to negotiate.
Alternative: fostering during your trip. Some Sri Lankan rescue orgs (Embark, Animal SOS Sri Lanka) offer 'holiday foster' where you take a shelter dog on outings during your trip and return them at end. Costs nothing, provides shelter dogs socialization, gives you the pet-during-vacation feeling without the import stress. Contact via their Facebook pages 1-2 months ahead. Warmly recommended.
Important legal note: bringing a dog INTO Sri Lanka requires import permits from the Department of Animal Production and Health, rabies vaccination certificate + microchip + serology test + health certificate + quarantine notice. Full process takes 6-12 months to arrange properly - not something to do casually for a vacation. For a rescue dog specifically: paperwork trail is critical. Consider whether it's worth the stress on the dog for a 2-3 week trip. Many pet-owners leave their dogs with family or professional boarding at home instead.
