Sri Lanka best pilgrimage circuit for Buddhists - how many days?
3 Answers from travellers
Traditional 16-place Buddhist pilgrimage (Solosmasthana): Anuradhapura's 8 sacred sites (Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanwelisaya, Thuparamaya, Jetavanaramaya, Abhayagiri, Mirisawetiya, Isurumuniya, Vessagiriya), plus Mihintale, Sithulpawwa (Yala area), Kelaniya, Kataragama, Nalanda, Nagadeepa (Jaffna), Somawathiya (Polonnaruwa), Muthiyangana (Badulla). Complete traditional pilgrimage: 10-14 days by chauffeur. Common shortened version: Anuradhapura + Kandy (Temple of Tooth) + Adam's Peak in 5 days.
Book a chauffeur familiar with pilgrimage routes - not all drivers know the ceremonial sequences. Ceylon Roots, Aitken Spence Pilgrimages arrange full circuit packages. Best done Poya-adjacent for spiritual timing. Dress white throughout pilgrimage traditionally.
