Sri Lanka best places to see fireflies - synchronized display?

Sri Lanka firefly hotspots: (1) Sinharaja Rainforest edges (Kudawa entrance area) - synchronized firefly displays in wet season (May-September). Evening walks with local guide, 6:30-8pm. Communities of thousands flashing in sync in bamboo groves. Truly magical. (2) Muthurajawela Marsh (near Negombo) - mangrove firefly boat tours available May-October, quieter numbers than Sinharaja but easier access. (3) Bundala National Park edges (evening entries limited but possible with permit) - occasional firefly displays. (4) Rainforest Ecolodge Sinharaja - arranges private firefly evening walks for guests. (5) Kanneliya rainforest (smaller than Sinharaja) - firefly displays reported May-Sept. Best experience: Sinharaja synchronized display with guide, June or July night. Book Rainforest Ecolodge or arrange via a Sinharaja-based operator.
Also: Ratnapura area (surrounds of Sinharaja) has small forest patches with fireflies. Some village homestays near Sinharaja arrange 'firefly walks' for guests as evening activity - much cheaper than resort-based experiences, more authentic. Contact Sinharaja Adventures or Nature Explorers for community-based options.
Firefly viewing tips: (1) No flashlight/phone light during viewing (spoils the display, disrupts fireflies). (2) Wear insect repellent (mosquitoes are heavier than fireflies). (3) Long sleeves + trousers. (4) Move quietly and slowly - fireflies get startled. (5) Give eyes 15+ minutes to adjust to darkness. (6) No photography without red-light setup (white flash ruins the experience for other watchers). The synchronized displays typically peak 10-30 min after full darkness. Some evenings are more spectacular than others (weather-dependent).
