Sri Lanka best plant nursery orchid buying export?
3 Answers from travellers
Sri Lankan orchid nurseries: (1) Wathsala Orchids (Peradeniya - major supplier, foreign export experience, plants shipped worldwide). (2) Royal Botanic Gardens Peradeniya (orchid house - view + sometimes plants sold). (3) Silver Leaf Nurseries (Colombo area). (4) Aitken Spence Botanical Gardens visits (some orchid focus). Export process: (a) Buy from nursery with export documentation experience. (b) Need CITES certificate for many orchid species (endangered wild orchid trade regulated). (c) Cultivated hybrid orchids easier to export than species. (d) Phytosanitary certificate required for most destinations. (e) Cost of certification USD 30-80. (f) Shipping USD 100-300 depending on quantity.
Wathsala Orchids has been shipping orchids internationally for 20+ years - knows the paperwork. Contact via Facebook or direct visit for orchid selection. Sri Lankan native orchids protected - do NOT collect wild orchids. Nursery-grown hybrids are the legal + ethical choice. Vandaceous types + phalaenopsis most travel-friendly.
