Galle Fort colonial layers: Portuguese built original 1588 fort (small, defensive). Dutch VOC captured 1640, rebuilt massively as trading fort you see today (walls, bastions, gates). British took 1796, added lighthouse + civic buildings. What to visit: (1) Portuguese: Old Star Fort (small, weathered original walls). (2) Dutch: Main Gate + all fortifications + Dutch Reformed Church (1755, oldest Protestant church in Sri Lanka) + Old Dutch Hospital (now shopping precinct) + Meera Mosque (Dutch era). (3) British: Clock Tower (1883), Lighthouse (1938 replaced older), All Saints Church. Best done as guided walking tour - Galle Heritage Walks USD 25-45 for 2-hour tour.
Also: Portuguese heritage extends beyond Galle - Fort Colombo area, Batticaloa Fort, Mannar Fort all have Portuguese layers. But Galle Fort is the most concentrated + preserved. Galle Historical Mansion (Dutch merchant house) is exceptional. And walking the fort walls at sunset (free!) is one of Sri Lanka's iconic experiences.
