Sri Lanka Poya days 2026 (dates approximate - check monthly): January 3, February 1, March 3, April 1, April 30, May 30, June 29, July 28, August 27, September 26, October 25, November 24, December 24. Special significance: (1) Vesak Poya (May 30) - Buddha's birth/enlightenment/parinirvana. (2) Poson Poya (June 29) - arrival of Buddhism to Sri Lanka. (3) Esala Poya (July 28) - Kandy Esala Perahera peak. (4) Duruthu Poya (January 3) - Kelaniya Perahera. (5) Navam Poya (February 1) - Colombo Gangaramaya Navam Perahera. Alcohol prohibited public sale on Poya days (hotels serve stock). Meat prohibited at some establishments.
Question: does 'alcohol prohibited' extend to buying at bars + hotels or just retail sale? Trying to plan wine dinner options during Poya day dates in my itinerary. Understanding rules clearly.
For pilgrimage timing: attending temple ceremonies on Poya days = spiritually significant. Sri Lankan Buddhists observe with white clothing, temple visits, meditation, dana (giving). Foreign visitors welcomed to observe respectfully. Very moving cultural experience.
