Sri Lanka best rare orchid nursery visit Peradeniya?
3 Answers from travellers
Sri Lankan orchid resources: (1) Royal Botanical Gardens Peradeniya orchid house (world-class collection, plants sold at nursery). (2) Wathsala's Orchid Nursery (Peradeniya area - major supplier, foreign export experience). (3) Silver Leaf Nurseries (Colombo). (4) Sri Lanka has 187 native orchid species (30+ endemic). Real Sri Lankan orchids: Dendrobium, Vanda, Phalaenopsis hybrids grown extensively. Native endemics rarely sold (protected). Cultivated tropical hybrids USD 5-100 per plant. Export requires: CITES paperwork for some species, phytosanitary certificate, destination country entry permits.
Meeting Wathsala at her Peradeniya nursery next Tuesday. Selecting 6 hybrid orchids for export. She'll handle CITES + phytosanitary paperwork. Total cost about USD 400 for plants + shipping to US home. Bucket-list collector purchase!
For export: buy from experienced exporters (Wathsala Orchids does 20+ years international shipping). USD 30-80 per plant plus shipping USD 100-300 for international. Consolidate multiple plants for cost efficiency. 2-4 weeks transit time typical. Some plants shipped bare-root in moss.
