Sri Lanka best Ratnapura gem mining visit - see mines?
3 Answers from travellers
Ratnapura ('City of Gems') has active mining. Visitor options: (1) National Gem and Jewellery Museum + working mine visit tour arranged through NGJA (National Gem Bureau) - USD 30-50, half day, see mining process, cutting, sorting. (2) Individual small-scale mine visits arranged through Ratnapura tour operators - risky, potential scam pressure to buy stones. (3) Cutting workshops in central Ratnapura - watch stones being faceted. Book through NGJA-associated operator to avoid scam mines. Skip: 'my uncle has a mine, come see' street offers. Do not buy stones at mine - go to Colombo NGJA-certified dealer for actual purchase.
Safer route: visit Ratnapura for the mining experience, watching, learning - but buy stones only after returning to Colombo through licensed NGJA dealers with certificates. The two-stage approach (see + then buy separately) protects against scams. Ratnapura mines fascinating but sales pressure heavy.
