Sri Lankan reef restoration programs: (1) Blue Resources Trust (Colombo-based marine conservation NGO - programs at multiple sites). (2) Ocean Strategic Sri Lanka (private + corporate + volunteer). (3) Pigeon Island Marine Park volunteer opportunities (through Wildlife Department). (4) Hikkaduwa Marine National Park programs. (5) Coral Cay Sri Lanka (occasional restoration expeditions). Programs include: reef survey, coral fragmentation + planting, invasive species removal, water quality monitoring. Certification: PADI Open Water minimum, Advanced for deep work. Cost: USD 200-800/week depending on lodging + meals.

Best sites 2026: Hikkaduwa Marine Sanctuary (recovering from 2016 bleaching), Pigeon Island Marine Park (Nilaveli), Bar Reef Sanctuary (Kalpitiya). Different projects different sites. Coral bleaching increasingly serious - urgent conservation work.

Signing up for Blue Resources Trust 2-week coral restoration program in Hikkaduwa starting December. Also getting PADI Coral Reef Conservation certification during program. Making genuine conservation contribution while diving Sri Lanka. Legit organization confirmed via NGO registry.

Time commitment: 1-week intro programs available. Serious contribution: 2-4 week commitment. Some programs offer PADI Coral Reef Conservation Distinctive Specialty certification. Look for accredited programs vs greenwashing tourism.
