Sri Lanka best religious festival calendar 2026 dates - what to time?

Major 2026 festivals: (1) Duruthu Perahera (Kelaniya, January full moon). (2) Navam Perahera (Colombo Gangaramaya, February full moon). (3) Sinhala/Tamil New Year (April 13-14). (4) Vesak Poya (May full moon - lanterns everywhere, Buddha's birth/enlightenment). (5) Poson Poya (June full moon - Mihintale focus). (6) Esala Perahera (Kandy, July-August, 10 nights). (7) Nallur Festival (Jaffna, August-September, 25 days). (8) Deepavali (October-November, Hindu). (9) Christmas (December - big Christian community). Perahera schedules confirmed 6-8 weeks ahead by respective temples.
Trying to decide between Vesak (May) and Nallur (Aug-Sep). Vesak sounds accessible but Nallur sounds spectacular. Which is more overwhelming for a cultural traveler experiencing something like this first time?
For serious cultural immersion: attend Kataragama festival (July-August, multi-religious - Buddhist + Hindu + Muslim + indigenous Vedda syncretic). Fire walking, self-mortification rituals, sacred bathing. Not for faint of heart but culturally unique.
Vesak (May full moon) is my personal favorite for atmosphere - entire country lit with paper lanterns for 3 days, dansal (free food stalls) everywhere, temple ceremonies. If you can time one festival: Vesak.
Also: Adam's Peak season (Dec-May) is a spiritual pilgrimage window - climbing during full moon nights is unforgettable atmosphere. Not a festival technically but pilgrimage flow feels festival-like.
Kandy Esala Perahera is the standout - book Kandy accommodation 6+ months ahead. Nallur is Sri Lanka's most spectacular Hindu festival - Jaffna hotels fill 3 months out. Book around these two.
