Real internet speed reality 2026 by region: (1) Colombo - fiber widely available, most properties 100-500 Mbps, best 5G coverage (Mobitel/Dialog), consistent. Best region for reliable high-speed work. (2) Galle Fort + Unawatuna - fiber in most guesthouses, 50-200 Mbps typical, occasional dropouts during storms. (3) Ahangama/Weligama nomad hubs (Verse Collective, Kite Nomad Village) - 100-300 Mbps at coliving spaces, mixed at Airbnbs (30-100 Mbps). (4) Kandy - fiber at mid-range+ hotels, 50-150 Mbps, 5G limited. (5) Ella + hill country - variable, 20-80 Mbps typical, occasional outages during monsoon. (6) East coast (Trincomalee, Batticaloa) - slower, 20-50 Mbps typical, less reliable. (7) Rural / national park areas - 4G only, 10-30 Mbps. For 100+ Mbps consistent: Colombo, Galle, or dedicated coliving hubs (Verse Collective). Elsewhere, backup with mobile hotspot.

Backup strategy: buy a Dialog or Mobitel unlimited data SIM (30GB tourist plan for USD 15, or larger monthly plans USD 30-50) to use as mobile hotspot when WiFi drops. Sri Lankan 4G/5G is actually excellent in most tourist areas - often faster than the WiFi. Test with your prospective host BEFORE booking a month - ask for a Speedtest screenshot from their current WiFi. Serious remote workers should not book anywhere without this.

Speedtest before booking + backup SIM. Thank you!

Also: power reliability matters as much as internet. Sri Lanka has occasional planned power cuts (schedule announced) - a good coliving/hotel has UPS backup for router. Ask specifically. UPS + fiber = reliable work environment. Just fiber without UPS = you lose everything mid-call when power drops.
