Sri Lanka best royal palaces history tour - ancient kingdoms?
3 Answers from travellers
Sri Lanka's ancient royal capitals circuit: (1) Anuradhapura (377 BCE - 1017 CE - Sinhalese kingdom, 8 sacred sites, Ruwanwelisaya, Sri Maha Bodhi - the Buddha's original tree). (2) Polonnaruwa (1017-1250 CE - post-Chola kingdom, ruined palace, Gal Vihara Buddha statues). (3) Yapahuwa (1273-1284 - short-lived capital, cliff-top rock fortress with steep steps). (4) Dambadeniya. (5) Kurunegala. (6) Kotte (near Colombo - later medieval). (7) Kandy (Sinhalese capital until 1815 - last royal city, Temple of Tooth). Full royal capitals circuit: 7-10 days. Anuradhapura + Polonnaruwa + Kandy is essential 3-city minimum.
Yapahuwa is dramatically underrated - steep ornamental stone staircase (unique in Sri Lanka), fortress hill setting, tiny fraction of the Sigiriya crowds. Half-day visit from cultural triangle base. Rock-cut architecture heritage lovers will be amazed.
