Sapphire buying process: (1) Go to NGJA (National Gem and Jewellery Authority, Colombo) FIRST - they test stones for USD 6-10 per stone, certificate confirms species, natural/synthetic, heat treatment status. (2) Buy from NGJA-registered dealers ONLY - list at ngja.gov.lk. Reputable: Sifani, Zam Gems, Colombo Jewellery. (3) Prices vary hugely: pale blue Ceylon sapphire USD 200-500 per carat entry, top royal blue USD 3000-15000 per carat, padparadscha USD 5000-30000 per carat. (4) Always get lab certificate (Gübelin, GIA, or SSEF are top international - AIGS + NGJA local). (5) Get invoice for customs. Skip: 'my uncle owns a mine' offers, hotel jewelry stores, Ratnapura direct without local guide.
Rules of thumb: real Ceylon sapphire has natural inclusions (visible under 10x loupe) unless heavily treated. Perfect stones are usually treated/synthetic. Star sapphires have visible 6-ray asterism under single light. Never pay before certification. Take 2-3 days between seeing stone and buying - reputable dealers accept this without pressure.
